Students worked as a team to build Prana the Dinosaur. She is a “smart” inflatable sculpture. The design enables the sculpture to monitor and visualize the current air quality data of Cypress, CA. Prana has been programmed to emit colored light in accordance to the current air quality data extracted from Airnow.gov, a cross-agency government website. Airnow.gov is dedicated to transmitting U.S. air quality conditions and forecasts.
Prana ("breathing", the breath of life) is described on Wikipedia as a Sanskrit word that refers to a vital, life-sustaining force of living beings and vital energy in natural processes of the universe. Prana is a central concept in Ayurveda and Yoga where it is believed to flow through a network of fine subtle channels called nadis.
The hope for this project is to inform our school community with specific air quality data and to spark critical dialogue on campus. This sculpture was inspired by the many other air quality related projects studied in the course.

Macha Suzuki LA TIMES REVIEW!
Remember "Enchanted Forest" @ Concrete Walls?
Another CCW Artist is "movin' on up", don't miss out his solo show at Sam Lee Gallery in Chinatown....DAVID PAGEL didn't.
Read what DP thinks of the show!
LA TIMES by David Pagel
A menagerie in contentment
In a city where people pay for manicures for their cats and take their dogs to pet shrinks, hotels and spas, it's not all that outlandish to imagine them buying art for their furry companions. Those days are not yet upon us. But true art is always ahead of the curve, so if you want to see what may be in store for the future, head over to Macha Suzuki's L.A. solo debut at the Sam Lee Gallery. Five sculptures by the 29-year-old, Japanese-born, L.A.-based artist come from so far out in left field that they seem to be more suited for pets than people -- and all the better for it.
Simple contentment is the dominant emotional tone of Suzuki's handsomely handmade animals, which inhabit artificial settings that resemble customized fusions of works by Constantin Brancusi, Isamu Noguchi, Yoshitomo Nara and Evan Holloway. Unflagging loyalty and unapologetic dependence are also evoked, as is the unflappable serenity of creatures that gracefully avoid the daily dramas humans often get caught up in, making mountains of molehills and tempests in teacups.
Part of the power of Suzuki's sedate, well-adjusted sculptures resides in their capacity to translate the virtual space of painting into three dimensions.
Sometimes he does this by treating the space within his pedestals (visible through the fence-like slats of their sides) as dioramas filled with undersea life or pulsating light shows. At other times, Suzuki charges what we usually think of as negative space with electrifying energy. The digitally printed leaves on the tree in "Plan B" flutter with the faintest breeze. And the 72 arrows that surround the fluffy white sheep in "Minor Threat" form a perfect circle or menacing halo, suggesting geometric perfection as well as St. Sebastian and the Lamb of God.
The birds, cows, cats and fish in Suzuki's low-tech, cartoon-style sculptures inhabit a peaceable kingdom whose artificiality enhances its innocence and fragility. That's the world where pampered pets live, where slow, steady rhythms provide tiny islands of respite from the fast-paced craziness of modern life.

"Exceedingly Way Too Over Hung" 5th Annual $99.99 Show 90+ Artists, 150+ Works
December 7 – January 4, 2008 Opening Reception: Friday, December 7, 2007 , 6-9pm
Concrete Walls, an alternative art space located on Wilshire's Miracle Mile, is pleased to announce our 5th Annual $99.99 Art Show.
Fine art and commerce must not always produce an anxious relationship; it is quite often a hostile one. A gallery owner must weigh the relative merits of price versus sales, and whether the artist's style merits the gallery's reputation, i.e., price versus sales.
"Art bargains" for the general public are generally non-existent, and for the wealthy: preventable. Exclusive charity art shows have become the favored venue for many good artists to display works at charitable prices, which are often in turn, of charitable value. One cannot argue with a good deed done for a good cause; we are only left to audit the books.
The "Exceedingly Way Too Over Hung" show is an attempt to create a small demilitarized zone in the world of art sales. We have over 90 artists at various career stages with varied styles, who have chosen to show and sell their work for a small sum, not to prevent sinister habits, but to subsidize a population that is often unable to participate in the art market.
Some of our artists have shown at: The Hammer Museum, Carl Berg Gallery, Happy Lion, Contemporary, the Pacific Asia Museum , ACME, Black Dragon Society and Newspace. And one of the artists is the 2005 National Air Guitar Champion.
How to view 90+artists: Begin at the beginning and go on till you come to the end; then stop. La tristesse durera toujours. Lewis Carroll/Van Gogh's last words.

Sundowners @ Happy Lion TOMMAROW!
Seann Brackin, Naomi Buckley, Spencer Douglass, Aragna Ker, Candice Lin, Maeghan Reid / “The Sundowners”
November, 10th, 2007 — December 22nd, 2007
Opening reception: Saturday, November 10th 6—9 PM
Performance by Anna Oxygen at 8 pm.
Sundowners: Nomads. Searchers. Setting up shop. Working the land. Moving on. On the lam. The weathered American landscape filters through the windows, its once wild frontier a myth, a relic, an old motel with its entrails spilled. Los Angeles. A mythical, mystical illusion unto itself. Its waterways paved in concrete, its arid soil choked with mortar. A desert teeming with prim lawns and post-atomic flowerbeds lining endless rows of anonymous stucco. A city built upon projection, of limitless futures and invisible pasts, like props in an endless cycling of celluloid. Sundowners. A community of people downing the sun, shooting stars out of the sky, yet simultaneously basking in their light.
The Happy Lion is pleased to present Sundowners with works by Seann Brackin, Naomi Buckley, Spencer Douglass, Arangna Ker, Candace Lin, and Maeghan Reid. Works in painting, drawing, sculpture and animation share an interest in terrain — both internal and external, and the vehicles used to navigate it. In reaction to a shared truth concerning the fragility and futility of production, these artists obsessively construct works that smile snidely at the simple gesture. Naomi Buckley employs an intense layering of materials: thin strips of wood, plastic, wallpaper, paint samples, screws, and bolts to create forms that reference vessels for travel. Maeghan Reid's work refers to landscape focusing on the oft-neglected peripheral aspects of her surroundings. The telephone wire, the dilapidated shingle roof, the warped linoleum, are the embellished areas of the vistas, the focus turned away from the lush greenery or the setting sun and set to our urban surroundings. Spencer Douglass uses discarded materials such as floor paneling, pillowcases, and mirrors as foundations for abstract paintings, translating the language of mass production into a personal one. Candice Lin creates fantastical landscapes that depict an idiosyncratic world of cloaked figures, horsemen, and heroines in delicately rendered watercolors. Seann Brackin’s cardboard spacecraft is easily imagined emerging from the desert running on some hybrid fuel, aiming to make it halfway around the world, or at least to the next discernable mountain. Aragna Ker’s skull sculpture, based in part on a ceremonial feast of his native Cambodia, seems to embody all aspects of life as the composition shifts from cheek bones to mountains, from trees to candles merging both the physical properties of self and landscape.

Every 2 miles of wetlands reduces a hurricane's surge by half a foot. Louisiana is losing its protective fringe of marshes and barrier islands faster than any place in the United States. Since the 1930s some 1,900 square miles of coastal wetlands—nearly the size of Delaware—have vanished beneath the Gulf of Mexico due to human development and intervention. The state continues to lose about 25 square miles of land each year, roughly one acre every 33 minutes.
Common Ground is a community-initiated volunteer organization offering assistance, mutual aid and support to the New Orleans area. Their mission is to provide short-term relief for victims of hurricane disasters in the gulf coast region, and long-term support in rebuilding the communities affected in the New Orleans area. Their Wetlands Restoration program was created to address the dangers faced by New Orleans and the Gulf Coast by working to bring immediate attention to the ecological and political causes and effects of the 2005 hurricane devastation. They are dedicated to educating as many folks as possible, both in Louisiana and beyond, on the critical role that wetlands play in protection from storm surge and how to best keep them healthy.
Amongst other things, in the last 10 months, the Common Ground Wetlands Restoration Project has planted over 11,500 clumps of smooth cord grass, a species that helps prevent erosion, throughout coastal Louisiana. Common Ground volunteers have also been assisting with the planting of over 6,500 cypress trees in the Louisiana wetlands.

Featuring DJ Legion
Norm Laich's large-scale wall painting utilizes graphic imagery and lettering in a way that parallels media-driven lingo offered in ceremonies of free enterprise, liberty and social equality.
Jay Lizo's likens his mixed media installation combining Aretha Franklin's "Think" with text from Mother Pollard, a Montgomery Bus Boycott participant, to when a DJ plays a song that then triggers a memory game of when a person first heard the song, what they were doing, what was going on in the world during that time. This game is what drives his work.

D.PAGEL's Review of Gwen Pool in the LA TIMES!
If you didn't know now you know....
Congrats to Gwen Pool on her amazing review by David Pagel. We wish it was about her show at Concrete Walls, but the praise by "DP" was well deserved! Way to go GWEN!
"Surrealism for Kids" could be the subtitle of "The Object," a five-artist exhibition at Carl Berg Gallery. Ordinary objects and mundane materials take on lives of their own as the L.A. sculptors gently push them in suggestive directions and then set them loose, leaving them free to do their own things in a viewer's imagination.
Gwen Pool's enchanting diorama gets the show off to a great start. Lovingly crafted of crocheted and knitted yarn, Jell-O molds and homemade bicycle wheels, "To Everything Turn, Turn, Turn" depicts a fantastic land of Ferris wheels, desktop fans, rolling hills and Op art patterns.
If Chris Burden collaborated with a bunch of farmland grandmothers to form an avant-garde quilting bee, Pool's piece is what they might make. Its charm does not mollify its kick or sugarcoat Pool's bittersweet vision of relentless suburban sprawl and the transformation of America into a cheesy theme park.

Claudia Nieto @ High Energy Constructs
Concrete Walls Friend Claudia Nieto will making her Los Angeles Debut in China Town @ High Energy Constructs. Come out and represent!
"Neo Dolce" December 2, 2006 – January 6, 2007
High Energy Constructs presents Neo Dolce, a group exhibition of works on paper by artLedge (Brandon Alevendia & Caleb Lyons), Arryan Decataur, Marc Herbst, Jim Johnson, Lia Lowenthal, Claudia Nieto, Paul Paiement, James Powers, Daniel Purbrick, and Amy Robinson.
Neo Dolce draws together artists from Chicago, Denver, Los Angeles, New York, and San Francisco whose works demonstrate laborious, mystical, and playful relations with the materiality of paper, both formally and conceptually. Their works come from processes that metaphysically explore and physically craft narratives concerning commitment and community, health and hybridity, labor and leisure.

Pacific Asia Museum in Pasadena Banquet: A Feast for the Senses
November 10, 2006 - February 4, 2007
Reception Friday, Nov.10, 7-9pm
The Asian and Asian-American artists selected for participation in this international exhibition include Chiho Aoshima, Ambreen Butt, Patty Chang, Jiae Hwang, Sang-Bin Im, Takehito Koganezawa, Aragna Ker, Susan Lee-Chun, Li Jin, Kohei Nawa, Kaz Oshiro, Jung Eun Park, Zhang Huan, and Zhi Lin. Highlights of the exhibition include the work of Li Jin, an artist who specializes in ink-wash paintings on paper that represent scenes of everyday life. Li is most influenced by depictions of food in Song (960–1279) and Yuan (1260–1368) dynasty Gongbi paintings—a style known for its meticulous and graceful style. Referencing the intersection of food with gender issues, Chiho Aoshima’s computer drawn, digital print Sublime Grave Dweller Shinko, portrays the deity Shinko in the act of consuming negative souls in a cemetery and exhaling their cleansed spirits in the form of bees. A young woman with a bowl of noodles on her head (post-bicycle accident) is shown in the lower right-hand corner. One of Aoshima’s primary interests is in depicting Japanese women in nontraditional roles.

APORIA August 26th - Sept. 16th Opening Reception August 26th 6-9pm
compact/space is pleased to announce Aporia, a multi-media exhibition curated by Matt Heizman
An aporia arises as the result of equally conceivable yet contradictory premises. Literally meaning with no pathway, it exists theoretically as a seemingly unsolvable dilemma in a question. Much current artwork dealing in abstraction operates like an aporia, providing collectively inconsistent premises to create a myriad of alternative assertions. Such are the artists of Aporia.
Stephen Childs confounds the documentary aspect of photography and pushes it towards indecipherability. He shoots out-of-focus photographs and uses repetition to create mysterious and colorful abstract images. Child's photos are mounted on wooden panels and reminiscent of lush abstract paintings, further confusing one's understanding of what one is viewing.
Culling subject matter from current events or local ephemera, many of Kent Hammond's objects drift away from their recognizable influences as he allows them to develop a certain autonomy. Often these works become completely nonrepresentational. Other of Hammond's paintings, drawings, sculptures, and collages are inspired by and include images and detritus from recognizable media side by side with ambiguous abstraction.
Channeling the subversive spirit of bohemian countercultures of the late 60's and early 70's, Ben Shaffer attempts to advance the collective consciousness. He attempts to influence us back to a belief in the "primitive" tradition of art and its role in magic. His kaleidoscopic tunnels utilize the hypnotic effect of flashing lights in an attempt to subdue the mind into a relaxed and meditative state of awareness.
